Jimmy Carter: America is ready for a gay president
December 16th, 2010
Former President Jimmy Carter believes America is ready for a gay president.
“I would say that the country is getting acclimated to a president who might be female, who might obviously, now be black and who might be as well, a gay person,” Carter said in a recent interview with Bigthink.com. “Because step-by-step we have realized that this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue 50 years ago… or 40 years ago.”Though Carter believes America is ready to elect a gay president, he isn’t quite sure that president should be allowed to marry, at least according to a 2005 Fox News interview.
“My own belief is that there should be a distinction between so-called gay marriages, which I look upon as a possibility of a church- ordained blessing of God on a union, which I think should be between a man and a woman. But at the same time, that people who do have gay union in a court or in secular terms not relating to religion, should be treated with complete equality.”

An election for President and Commander in Chief of the Military must strive to be above reproach. Our public institutions must give the public confidence that a presidential candidate has complied with the election process that is prescribed by our Constitution and laws. It is only after a presidential candidate satisfies the rules of such a process that he/she can expect members of the public, regardless of their party affiliations, to give him/her the respect that the Office of President so much deserves.
