Rowan Marshall, 5, carries a Texas flag as she runs up the steps of the the San Jacinto Monument during ceremonies commemorating the 174th Anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. Rowan attended the event with her father Greg Marshall and sister Brenna. She is a descendant of John Henry Dillard, who fought and died at the Alamo, and has attended the ceremony every year since she was born
This day in history Sam Houston finished off Santa Ana in our War of Independence for the nation of Texas in 1836.
Almost every Texan has some link. In my family we had no blood line links to the first Texans, but we did have a leather belt, one of Sam Houston's grandson's had received and gave to us. We proudly remember these that finished the war and the first defenders, the men who died at the Alamo March 6,1836.
