My Middle East Peace Plan

The best ideas are the simplest ones.

The NATO treaty was created April 4, 1949 and currently stands at 28 members. It is based on the King Arthurian round table idea of Might For Right instead of Might Makes Right. NATO members pledge --an attack on one, is an attack on all.

For 61 years all of these member nations have enjoyed freedom from nation on nation attack.

Why in these past 62 years since the rebirth of the state of Israel have America's leadership not seen the wisdom, in signing a mutual defense treaty between America and Israel? Why has Israel not been requested to join NATO?

No defense treaty ever written has stopped all wars, but the NATO treaty or one which America is a party to, has been the best deterrence we've known in our lifetimes.
With America as a defense partner to Israel, this would give the 57 Arab states another good reason to think twice in their plans for war or acts against Israel, with a credible defense partner, Israel would be more likely to receive realistic peace proposals from the Arabs.

For many years until Desert Storm in 1991, our foreign policy was predicated on avoiding all entanglements in the Middle East, including the nation of Israel. Middle Eastern oil and the world's energy supply, was the no man's land between the former USSR and the USA. We stayed out, as long as they stayed out. Detente cold war style.

Those days are gone, the Middle East issue landed full force on our doorstep September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center twin towers were attacked by Muslim jihadists. We are now free and clear to take sides. Russia has chosen Iran. We need to chose Israel.

During this election season and onward we need to bring this issue to the forefront with those we elect to office. If we want a more peaceful Middle East, we need to make our preferences known to all the world. A mutual defense treaty between Israel and America would clearly signal that position.
