The Party Of No Way

Republican senators voted against ending debate 57 to 41 on the Campaign Spending & Disclosure Act. In order to stop a call for a cloture vote, the filibuster is being invoked by the Republicans today, to stop this bill.

The Campaign Spending and Disclosure Act is Obama's promised circumvention of the Supreme Court's ruling in January 2010 allowing fewer limitations on campaign contributions by corporations on grounds it violated the 1st amendment. Obama vowed in his State of the Union speech, he was going to appeal the Supreme Court ruling.

Obama may know of such a court, however if such a court exists, he should enlighten the rest of us, because from the founding of the Republic and for the succeeding 221 years since the ratification of the constitution, the Supreme Court is the court of last resort and it's rulings are final.

This Republican filibuster is as much in support of the Supreme Court as it is in opposition to the proposed legislation.

The modern filibuster vaguely resembles the filibuster of old. Rule 22 of the Rules of the Senate, allows the supporting group to give notice of the filibuster, instead of the old style traditional test of stamina with non stop talking. As long as there are 41 supporters such demonstration is dispensed with under the new method, with debate deemed unended. The majority leader can call for the old style filibuster procedures if he chooses.

Other business continues.
