AOL News Surge Desk (Aug. 6) -- The daring life and times of Swedish pro-skier Fredrik Ericsson ended Friday when he fell to his death while attempting to scale and then ski K2, the world's second tallest mountain.

"Fredrik was fixing rope to the rock ... when he lost purchase and was unable to arrest his fall," David Schipper, a friend of Ericsson's, wrote in a blog post explaining the incident on the deceased skier's website. "This happened some time between 7 and 8 AM. Later it was determined he fell about 1000m [3,280 ft.] and did not survive."

Somehow this death doesn't faze me, other than I hope he was right with God, when he slipped and fell. There's a difference in dying for something meaningful and dying for nothing, other than self gratification.

This past week we had yet another soldier, a Marine from the Houston area return from Afghanistan to be laid to rest, he gave his life for his country. He was young and wanted to live, but instead he answered the call to duty from his nation.

Lance Corporal Shane R Martin USMC,23, was born in Durban, South Africa. In 1999 at age 12 his family immigrated to the US, settling in Houston. L/Cpl Martin was married July 4, 2008. During his first deployment, which was to Iraq in 2008, L/Cpl Martin received his American citizenship. The ceremony took place at a palace once owned by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Shane Martin died fighting against terror and tyranny, a good young life ended much too soon. But Shane died for a reason, a very good reason. On behalf of a grateful nation let us say thank you to him and all those who serve, and all those who have served before them, back to the days of Lexington and Concord. Let us vow to not let their sacrifices be made in vain.

Fredik Ericsson lived a selfish life of personal indulgence. His death counts for very little.

Shane rest in peace, God bless you.

Steve
