  1. maybe you should google what crosshairs look like. because those aren't surveyor's symbols.

  2. What is a "surveyor's symbol"? I'm hearing all kinds of back-pedaling rationalizations by right-wing extremists... "They are not cross hairs, they're 'surveyor's symbols'!". "They are cross hairs, but who cares?" "I can't imagine why anyone would associate the symbols and terms [ie: reload, target, bulls eyes, etc.] with gun violence!"

Well, I got news for you... Sarah Palin herself referred to the as "cross hairs".... "like the kind you see on a map". When do we routinely see cross hairs on a map? What kind of map is Sarah accustomed to looking at? She doesn't strike me as a person particularly interested in geography.

The fact that she would claim that she can't understand how people could possibly equate the imagery and language in question with gun violence is just one more example among countless others of why she is so unfit to hold public office.

She realized this early on, and made the wise move to capitalize on being an attention whore. She keeps herself in the headlines by crafting the well-timed intermittent inflammatory Facebook status post. This ensures that she is maintains as much publicity as Lindsay Lohan, and therefore ensures the steady stream of lucrative and cushy jobs in TV, ghostwritten books, and political appearances (prepped with palm crib notes, of course).

  3. Could you please show one NON Sarah Palin map which uses this "surveyors symbol"? You had to extract the symbol from the very map you're defending for the comparison to a gunsight.

  4. I'd also like to see a link to the "surveyor's symbol" that is from a surveyor related source and not from the same Palin map with labeling made since yesterday.

Also, your example of crosshairs is rather comically cherry picked. What about this one?

  7. You stupid, right wing nutcases. Take some moral responsibility for once. No one knows what a surveyor's symbol looks like. The intention was for the piece to look like the crosshairs of a scope. Maybe the idiot who drew it, didn't fashion it right. And the rhetoric is gun-toting, shoot em' up talk. Jebus, just friggin take the blame. And if they aren't crosshairs and you idiots aren't talking about guns, why did the Princess of Stupid take it down?? Dumb hillbillies!

  11. Thanks for the psu link. I had trouble finding one in Google images not knowing what to call it.

  12. Oh puleeze. I'm a real estate attorney for over 25 years. There is no such survey symbol. Crosshair symbols in surveying are always square. Round symbols represent pipes and never have crosshairs. Further, Palin herself called them bullseyes and referred to reloading. Try an ounce of honesty for a change.

  13. Back on March 25th 2010 it was already being discussed that this was a Surveyor Symbol and not a crosshairs.

    http://www.examiner.com/political-buzz-in-dallas/democrat-named-weiner-sarah-palin-should-shut-the-tweet-up

The left is the one who started using the crosshairs/bullseye references. Palin's Tweet was just her poking fun at the unhinged lefties who pretended it was an issue (notice she used quote marks on "bullseye" in her tweet).

In addition - the guy is CLEARLY not a Palin supporter or a Tea Partier. Trying to paint some vague anti-government sentiment as proof of Tea Party membership is ridiculous.

A friend described him as liberal. The reality is he was nuts and it doesn't really matter much what his political leanings were. He was unstable. We should be discussing how nothing was done if so many knew something was wrong.

Instead some idiot lefties wanting to use every tragedy as a political weapon prevent us from having that discussion because they are too busy acting like jealous 3rd grade girls trying to get the rest of the class to hate the pretty new girl.

They aren't too different from the shooter if you think about it. Perhaps they are hoping to incite one of their own to attack Palin?

  14. Gee, who to trust a "real estate attorney" or the Penn State College of Engineering....

Anyway, I've seen those symbols have a couple of uses.

1 - In geography courses, we called them "benchmark symbols" (but I'm not sure if that's an "official name" or just what we called it.

2 - Also, a similar symbol are used (in CADD software too) to represent the direction of current on electric circuits (a la Maxwell's screw rule)

Anyway, here's a geopographic example from the United States Geological Survey:
(Page 2, right hand side "Principal Point")

I can't believe the Left is trying to use the crimes of a mentally ill man to score political points. Disgusting.

And Real Estate guy, "Try an ounce of honesty for a change."

  16. Ask and ye shall receive. See symbol #79 (BM = Benchmark) It's a commonly used surveying symbol, as is #87. I should know. I'm a land surveyor.

  17. "Surveyor's symbols"? Really? Palin's use of the words "TAKE AIM" and "RELOAD" and other such rhetoric just doesn't work with mere surveyor's symbols but they DO make sense with gun CROSSHAIRS. Sorry, Sarah, but that's the lamest thing you've EVER come up with. You ARE culpable -- you didn't pull the trigger, but you sure planted the idea and encouraged someone else to do it. You don't have blood on your hands but its on your soul. Whatever happened to being PRO LIFE?

  18. But she called it a bullseye Nov 4th. I've never hear bullseye used in surveying.

  19. It seems the US government geological site knows their symbols.
About halfway through on the right column you will see "CONTROL DATA AND MONUMENTS." Now remember .. these are symbols for maps - maps like Sarah Palin's map. The first entry under the title bar is labled "Principal point,"

    http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/symbols/topomapsymbols.pdf

  20. Anon @ 9:56

A Principal point is the position from which surveying was done for a topographic survey. Exactly how does that apply to the way the symbols were used on Palin's map? Technically, they're only supposed to be used on provisional editions of surveys as well, according to your link. So, if that was the symbol they intended to use, they completely misused it.

Please tell me this is a parody

  22. If you are going to claim to speak for God, and hide behind religion, then have the khunas to be honest... Everyone knew what this rhetoric refers to... everyone knows what was meant... What would Jesus do now?

  23. What is wrong with some of you people....crosshair or suveyor symbol?? You are missing the point while you salivate listening to your socialist gurus... no one told this seriously disturbed individual to go out and kill people, other than the voices in his head or he's just a bad guy. End of story. Are you socialists really this desperate to use a tragedy like that which occurred in AZ in order to play politics? Rhetorical question - of course, you are! How do you live with yourselves?

  24. The whole point is that the CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT was targeted for ELECTORAL DEFEAT< NOT the congresswomen! Reading anything more into it, even if they ARE crosshairs(which they are not) is delusional.

    ReplyDelete
  25. "The whole point is that the CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT was targeted" so it wouldn't be a benmark/principal point would it because isn't that where you start a survey from not what you're aiming for? (Land Surveyor person can tell me).

This is used for target shooting:

    http://www.reedstargetshootingclub.co.uk/pages/images/target.jpg

    http://air.guns.20megsfree.com/contact.html

and as you said yourself the districts were targeted and Palin mentioned not to retreat but to reload when advertising it. For her and her people to say it's all to do with Surveyor's maps that they've probably never seen in their life is daft.

He's a nutter and wouldn't have needed that map to encourage him anyway. But you also can't say that what he did wasn't political because he said it was himself before he did it in his 'final thoughts'

"If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon. "

"Nonetheless, read the United States of America's Constitution to apprehend all of the current treasonous laws."

"The property owners and government officials are no longer in ownership of their land and laws from a revolution.

Thus, the revolutionary's from the revolution are in control of the land and the laws."

"No! I won't pay debt with a currency that's not backed by gold and silver! "

All of those are political points that have been made on talk back and rallies and what not.

  26. If I were a paranoid schizophrenic, I would see your "surveyor symbol" as a target to hit. The voices in my brian would tell me to take out that taget. If I lived in a gun readily available society, I would go out target practicing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. of course, all of you blaming Palin's "cross hair" symbol can PROVE that this nutter even glanced at her website?? That this loser ever listened to one of her speeches (let alone prove that he heard the "reload" comment? You can PROVE that while he was busy reading the communist manifesto, he was secretly plotting his "right wing" behavoir??? None of you even make any sense! You hate Palin, therefore everyone should hate Palin.... i think it was that kind of logic that got this murderer kicked out of college.

  28. Maybe this guy was a left-wing nutcase that wanted to delay the Republican led REPEAL of OBAMACARE??? anyone considered that? it's just as stupid an argument as saying that the symbolic targets caused his break with what was obviously a tenuous grip on reality!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am an engineer and can tell you those are NOT surveyors' symbols. Symbols used by surveyors have more lines, some at the top and and at the bottom depending on the data obtained during the survey. There is a lot more information on a survey data line than in a crosshair from a rifle. And the word RELOAD does not appear in the surveyors linguistic uses.

  31. It's clear from the context of Sarah Palin's own words that they are indeed surveyor's symbols. Listen to what she has said: "Don't retreat, remeasure the baseline", "the founding fathers sometimes settled differences with surveyor's transits" and "lock and lay out the chain". Yup... all surveyor references - nary a gun reference in her words.
