Our Forgotten Senior Citizens
Our current group of very senior citizens are extremely special people. Back in the 80's before Tom Brokaw penned his book, I was using the term, America's Greatest Generation well before he made that appellation famous. One of my interests is American History, and being a baby boomer, begotten from parents who are members of that generation, I grew up listening to their tales of toil and strife, of mortal sacrifice, of bloody victories won, of peace restored and nations rebuilt, it dawned on me rather obviously, what my parents did was far above and beyond the call of duty. Expanding on that thought, it was a not just them or a few more like them, rather it was a common theme that ran throughout that generation. A tumultuous life theme, yet these had it in them to be able to muster the will to rise above any adversity. That theme repeated itself over and over and over with these unique citizens. We your immediate offspring know what you did, yet as with every masterpiece of art, a Mona Lisa is greatly appreciated, yet it's magnificence cannot fully be comprehended by "one who was not there". The only words that come to mind, hollow as they may seem,..... Lest We Forget.
You have endured on behalf of the nation and persevered. Let no man doubt how richly you have earned the title "America's Greatest Generation."
Yet Obama sees the 17% senior block of voters as throw away people. His health care plan turns it's back on those who not only deserve a glorious and celebrated retirement, they who more than any before us, have so richly earned. Health care for a senior, especially these, must not be reduced or taken away. Waiting in long lines, or denied care entirely, are not what should be asked of them. These people have given and given, and yet given some more to America. How much can one country ask from a generation?
Seniors, Obama has overlooked something- you have children, and grandchildren, even great grandchildren, who are now voting age. You mobilized back in 1941, show Obama what you're made of once again. Let Washington know just how many votes the patriarchal seniors of this country can muster just through your own posterity. Send in letters not only bearing your signature, but also beneath it, the signatures of your children and grandchildren. Make it your Personal Declaration emblazoned with the "John Hancocks" on your family members. List your grievances and show this current crop of spoiled politicians, what a real American Political Action Committee looks like.
Our politicians must respect the wisdom and power of the elders who have a lifetime of contribution invested in this nation, and appreciate the fact you are not some throw away segment of the populous.
On behalf of the citizens of a grateful nation, thank you.
