Election 2010: New Mexico Governor
New Mexico Governor: Martinez 44%, Denish 42%
Friday, June 04, 2010
Fresh off winning the Republican nomination on Tuesday, county District Attorney Susana Martinez remains in a virtual tie with Democratic Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish in New Mexico’s gubernatorial contest.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in New Mexico shows Martinez picking up 44% of the vote, while Denish attracts 42%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and 10% remain undecided.
The two women were tied just before the primary with Denish at 43% and Martinez carrying 42%. It was a surprising tightening of the race after Denish led Martinez by 19 points in late March.
Martinez, the Dona Ana County district attorney, won a five-way contest for the GOP nomination Tuesday with 51% of the vote. Denish was uncontested in the state’s Democratic primary.
Among New Mexico voters not affiliated with either major political party, Martinez holds a 51% to 24% advantage.
Fifty-two percent (52%) of New Mexico’s voters favor repeal of the national health care reform plan, while 42% oppose repeal. Those numbers include 40% who Strongly Favor repeal and 30% who Strongly Oppose it. Support for repeal is slightly lower in New Mexico than it is on the national level.
Martinez picks up 79% support from those who Strongly Favor repeal of the law, while Denish earns the vote from 71% of those who Strongly Oppose repeal
