Watch What They Do

 February 6th, 2011
By Aaron Cantor

I have heard Charles Krauthammer say several times, “rather than listening to what they say, watch what they do.”

Well it looks like it is going to be business as usual with the newly elected Republican majority in the House.

Republicans who are now running the house are barley scratching the surface when it comes to reducing Congress’ generous budget even as they take a carving knife to many domestic agencies.
Under a new GOP plan, spending on domestic agencies would be cut 9 percent through September when the fiscal year expires, but at the same time the Congress would only suffer a 2 percent cut (you can’t trust any of them), they are going to get theirs regardless of anything else.

To be fair (if that is possible in D.C.) if you extend it to a full fiscal year the congressional cut would rise to 3.5 percent (not much)

If their plan becomes law, it could lead to some huge layoffs of tens of thousands of federal workers, big cuts in heating and housing subsidies for the poor, reduced grants to schools and law enforcement agencies, and a major blow to the Internal Revenue Service’s budget.

Large increases in the Congressional budget engineered by the Democrats when they held power in the House, would remain in place under the plan announced by the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep Harold Rogers, R-KY.

The plan which was developed in close coordination with Republican Speaker John Boehner’s office would cut congress’ budget less than any other domestic spending bill, except the one covering the Department of Homeland Security.

All 12 spending bills left unfinished by the Democrats will go into a single giant bill that the Republicans promise to bring up the week of February 14.

The idea of a giant bill to include everything is a bit off putting as there are too many places to hide bridges to nowhere, and given Washington’s proclivities for that sort of action it gives one pause, and begs the question: are we being hosed yet again?

Since the Democrats assumed the majority in 2007 the congressional budget alone has risen 23 percent to $4.7 Billion dollars, and just for grins, let’s look at the budget for the speaker’s office, it ballooned under Pelosi by 71percent as she engineered a $2 million dollar increase after the transfer of party control.

BTW just to digress for a moment, all that caca de toro the lame stream media was reporting in the paper today about the unemployment rate going down substantially, was just that. When a person runs out of benefits and stops looking for work they are taken off the unemployment rolls and are no longer counted (now you see it now you don’t), pretty slick how Washington does that huh?
One of the first orders of business when the GOP regained the House was to pass a bi-partisan measure to cut office and committee budgets by 5 percent, which led to a lot of high fiving even though it produced a meager $35 million dollars in savings while the deficit was climbing its’ way to $1.5 Billion dollars. That is a helluva difference folks!

Republicans assure us they will provide more specific financial details about the spending bills in the weeks ahead. RIIIIIGHT.

Two years guys, and the clock is ticking, git er done or else.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
