(Jun. 12, 2010) — An Israeli news source is reporting that the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden have been located, while another report states that his extended family has been held there by the Iranian government for years.

Bin Laden, his cohort Ayman al-Zawahiri and others have reportedly been hiding in the city of Sabzevar in Iran, which is in an area of mountains and desert in the northeastern section of the country.

The DEBKAfile reports that the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, “…and his intelligence chiefs are well aware that Bin Laden and Zawahiri are hiding in Iran. The leak to the Kuwait paper was intended to show the Obama administration that the Turkish leader’s ties with Iran had grown intense enough for him to be fully in the picture of Iran’s secret sanctuary for the authors of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.”

Al-Seyassa, a newspaper based in Kuwait, reportedly made the information public on Monday, June 7.

However, last month, The UK Telegraph had reported that not only had bin Laden received sanctuary in Iran, but he had also benefited from “the protection of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.”

DEBKA reports that American intelligence had revealed that “senior al Qaeda operatives living in Iran had been allowed to leave the country through Syria to orchestrate terrorist attacks on American targets.”

Iran’s leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has apparently dispatched his own flotilla of three ships to Gaza in an attempt to break the blockade which a Turkish delegation attempted to accomplish on May 31. Ahmadinejad reportedly pledged to Turkish leaders in a meeting early last week that “the vessels due to enter the disputed waters within days will not shrink from a head-on clash with Israel’s Navy and Air Force exclusion forces.” He was quoted as having said, “We’ll breach the Gaza blockade.”

The Turkish ships were reportedly financed by the IHH, which “belongs to a Saudi-based umbrella organization known to finance terrorism called the Union of Good.” The leader of the Union of Good has supported Hamas in the past with “millions of dollars.” Israel had banned the Union of Good in 2002.

Following the Israeli raid on board the Mavi Marmara, it was reported that Turkish newspapers had declared that three out of four of the Turks killed on May 31 had stated “their readiness to become martyrs.” About half of the 600 passengers aboard the six-ship flotilla were Turkish.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin of Russia reportedly is siding with the Iranians and Turks in recommending “bringing the Israeli attack on the Turkish flotilla before the United Nations.”

A report dated April 3, 2009, had quoted a second source as stating that bin Laden was hiding in Iran at that time.

On May 31, a top Al Qaeda operative was reported killed by an American missile in Pakistan. Mustafa Abu al-Yazid was considered the “chief operating officer” in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Another drone had killed Osama bin Laden’s son last year. Sa’ad bin Laden had been considered “a prominent figure in the murky relationship between Iran and al Qa’eda,”
