Sarah Palin, political rock star and current leader in the Republican race, swept into Texas for a stop at Fort Hood Friday as part of her national book-signing tour.
Palin's visit to Fort Hood came a month after a mass shooting spree on the Texas Army post that killed 13 and wounded dozens more. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, a psychiatrist, has been charged with launching the vicious rampage at the nation's largest base. Hasan, 39, faces 13 counts of premeditated murder, the start of a court-martial proceeding that could end in the death penalty.
On the same day as the signing, more than 40 Army reservists dedicated to counseling troubled soldiers in war zones deployed to Afghanistan. The Associated Press reports how they had spent the last month training together, and several soldiers from across the country volunteered to fill the void left by the three soldiers killed and six others seriously wounded.
About 1,250 fans lined up to show their support for Palin and Palin showed her support for the Army by donating her royalties from book sales to the families and victims of the Nov. 5 mass shooting.
Chron.com reports that victims' family members are ecstatic about Palin's help, said Ron Taylor, president of the Central Texas chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army.
He estimated the book signings would add more than $10,000 to the fund, which will help pay for travel expenses, lodging and missed work for family members who had to rush to Fort Hood to be with their loved ones, Taylor said.
The fund, which has fetched $250,000, will help more than 100 family members, he said.

An election for President and Commander in Chief of the Military must strive to be above reproach. Our public institutions must give the public confidence that a presidential candidate has complied with the election process that is prescribed by our Constitution and laws. It is only after a presidential candidate satisfies the rules of such a process that he/she can expect members of the public, regardless of their party affiliations, to give him/her the respect that the Office of President so much deserves.
This is so great. It's just like her to do something like this!
