AWOL staff sergeant doubts Obama’s citizenship

Staff Sgt. Daryn Moran, in an email that has circulated among adherents of the birther movement, said he stopped reporting for work at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, on Aug. 11 and said he won’t return until Obama “provides a birth certificate which stands up to professional examination.”

Air Force Times could not independently verify Moran’s comments or reach the airman Tuesday afternoon. Air Force record show Moran is an ophthalmology technician assigned to the 86th Medical Squadron. He told the interviewer he previously served in the Marine Corps, left on good terms and joined the Air Force in the months following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In an email posted Tuesday on BirtherReport.com and attributed to Moran, the NCO wrote a discharge is imminent and “basically paperwork.”
His first sergeant asked him to “refrain from more Internet activity,” but he cannot do so, he wrote.
Some have debated Obama’s citizenship since before his election and in April the president released a copy of his long-form birth certificate showing that he was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961. Still, some maintain the birth certificate is a forgery, while others say Barack Obama Sr.’s Kenyan citizenship should disqualify his son from holding the nation’s top office.
Moran’s case is reminiscent of Lt. Col. Terry Lakin, who served five months in prison for refusing a deployment to Afghanistan because he doubted Obama’s birth records were valid.
Moran, though, said he had no desire to go to prison like Lakin. He said he tried to resign several times from the Air Force, but his first sergeant wouldn’t allow it. He also talked about asking one of the doctors in his unit about her Muslim faith in March, one of his coworkers “couldn’t handle it” and that he was removed from his position.
“My conscience is violated,” he said. “I feel like I’m supporting the flag of whatever those Islamic countries are and the rainbow flag and not the red, white and blue. That’s not the kind of people I want to be associated with.”
In the Tuesday email on BirtherReport.com, Moran calls Obama “the enemy” and said his life has changed for the good since he went AWOL.
“Even if B. Obama is an illegal President, God still allows him to sit in the Oval Office, and both the Air Force and B. Obama may yet arrest me at any day,” he wrote. “I submit to my God in these matters.”
Moran’s father, retired Air Force Master Sgt. Howard Moran, told the Omaha World-Herald that he supports his son.
“I think he thinks he’s right, and so I’m behind him,” Howard Moran told the newspaper. “I am concerned they are going to put him in jail, though.”
