Oh here he goes again throwing numbers at us. One major issue that drags down the US economy is the cost burden of the government worker. There are simply too many of them, costing the taxpayer too much money.

The chart above is an abbreviated section from the most current Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are currently 131.3 million employed non government workers right now in America. There's another 22.5 million employed government workers.

Congratulations, for every government worker, six of you non government types have to come up with their salary. But there's a problem. You six only make on average $47,000 a year and your average tax payment is $6,000. So, no problem you 6 can pool your taxes 6 x $6,000= $36,000. There Mr Government Employee take our money and go away. Wrong. You still owe him $77,000. You see a Federal worker costs an average of $113,000 a year. So you 6 better each go borrow $12,800. Don't have it? Ask your Children to get a loan and let them pay it off when they get big.

This situation repeats itself every year. It's not just Defense Spending, or the cost of The Social Security program, you have to include the bloated pay costs and the over staffing of the government on every level.

Besides the 3,000,000 Federal workers making a six figure income, there are 19,000,000 State and City workers with there hands out as well.

Taxes are killing us. We hear the Republicans tell the Democrats, less taxes makes the economy go, not more taxes. Sorry about that Mr Government Worker you've got to go. At least half of the staff needs to find private sector work. "You used to be the third under secretary to the nightwatchman for the Ambassador to Ireland? Hmmm how impressive. How about a nice factory job. Can you make a Tire?"

The other half of the remaining government staff needs to take a 50% pay cut. We don't need to pay the third under secretary to the nightwatchman for the Ambassador to Ireland $113,000 a year. Actually $47,000 tops, that's what we average.

What about the 19,000,0000 State and City workers, that's where the bulk of our fire and police come from. 278,000 firemen 684,000 police. These two groups earn their pay and then some. (There are 800,000 volunteer citizen fire fighters that donate their time to supplement the paid fire fighters.)

I wouldn't touch the police and fire levels other than to pay them more and increase their numbers. But State and City staffing needs the scapel treatment too.

A blind man could see how badly this overstuffed bureaucracy needs attention. How much better would our economic prospects be if we had a streamlined government helping us, not dragging us down.

Give'em a green job. Just not our green.

Steve
