Do Big Boys Cry? Or John 11:35

Much perhaps too much is made of why or when men should or shouldn't cry. There is a difference between losing it because you got your favorite desert for dinner, and losing a loved one. There's a difference when the future of your nation is at stake and your steak order was late.

I recall as a young teen ager, hearing about the meanest toughest kid in town who was made to enlist,or go to jail, then wound up in Viet Nam. He was a Huey door gunner and as the story goes lost his best friend in combat. This tough guy cried for three days over the loss of his friend.

Nancy Pelosi is playing the cry baby card on John Boehner, for his impassioned election night press conference. If Boehner had been boo hooing it up because he stubbed his toe, then I would agree with the Witch of the West. But Boehner was clearly moved by the enormity of the moment, clearly it was the deep sense of patriotic duty For my money I'll take that kind of passion by the truckload.

George Washington wept many a night at Valley Forge. Abraham Lincoln shed some tears over the divisive war that pitted brother against brother. When Jesus stood before the tomb of his dead friend Lazurus, John 11:35 states "And Jesus Wept".

Nancy Pelosi makes a point to say she never crys over politics. Could the reason be, that it is all just a game to her. The main objective for her is power and personal gain. Tyrants only feel deep emotions when said power and personal fortunes are lost, they bemoan the elevator ride to the bottom, not the trip to the penthouse. Pelosi is now so far gone she expects the royal treatment and when she sees a man humbled to his core she knows no other way than to mock him.

Pelosi could very well have been sitting on a rock next to Lazurus' tomb having an earth friendly clay cup of wine, as Jesus approached weeping over the death of his friend. Nan would most likely have said " Oh christ, man up Jesus, Lazurus was in the top 2% income brackett, good riddance, besides who believes all that God stuff you've been talking about?"

Outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi may be giving up the gavel to Rep. John Boehner in the next Congress but she hinted this week that she still wears the pants in the House.

In an interview with The New York Times, Pelosi seemed to take a parting shot at her successor when asked if she saw him tear up on election night as he addressed his supporters after Republicans captured the House.

"You know what? He is known to cry. He cries sometimes when we're having a debate on bills," she told the newspaper. "If I cry, it's about the personal loss of a friend or something like that. But when it comes to politics – no I don't cry. I would never think of crying about any loss of an office, because that’s always a possibility, and if you're professional, then you deal with it professionally."

Boehner's office declined to respond to Pelosi's remarks.

Boehner choked up during his victory speech on Nov. 2 as he spoke about his rise to No. 3 in the presidential line of succession.

"I've spent my whole life, chasing the American dream," he said as his voice cracked, tears welled up in his eyes and supporters cheered. "I put myself through school working every rotten job there was…I poured my heart and soul into running a small business," he said, as he fought back tears.

Boehner and Pelosi were re-elected as leaders of their parties behind closed doors on Wednesday. Boehner was unopposed but Pelosi had to beat back a challenge from Rep. Heath Shuler, a moderate Democrat from North Carolina, who took to heart the concerns that some of his colleagues had over keeping the same leadership after suffering massive election losses. Pelosi won by a vote of 150-43.

In the interview with The New York Times, Pelosi wouldn't admit to having deep emotions about the setback for her party in the election.

"I have deep emotions about the American people," she said. "If I were to cry for anything, I would cry for them and the policies that they're about to face."

  2. I believe that John Boehner's tears are sincere, but I wish that he would contain them better. It is not that it is not okay for a man to cry or a politician to cry. It is that he cries far too easily and most of time they are tears for himself.

It is commendable that he cares so much about children in schools, that he wants them to have a shot at the American dream. But after his acceptance speech that he gave, I wondered if he really understood just what the American dream is:

    The American Dream:

The American dream is not about greed. The American dream is about opportunity, the opportunity to live free, pursue happiness and to earn one's own way in a country that does not over-coddle, over-rule, or over-tax people into government-dependence.
